Justice court rules change this weekend

By Erika Pedroza | Published Saturday, August 31, 2013

Rules governing civil cases filed in justice courts will change Sunday.

They affect the filing, pre-trial procedures, trial and appeal of all civil cases filed in a justice court.

“You may ask what in the world does this have to do with me?,” Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson said. “Owning a business, owning real estate property, if you have to file an eviction or a small claims court case in justice court, all of those rules will change.”

As a result of the changes, different forms must be filed.

The monetary limit on cases has not changed. It remains at $10,000, which includes attorney’s fees incurred but not statutory interest and court costs.

A complete listing of the regulations can be found on the websites of each county JP.
