Haney re-elected board president

Kevin Haney will continue to serve as Decatur School Board president after he was re-elected to the position at Thursday’s meeting.

Jeff Alling will also remain vice president. Jeff Elder was elected secretary.

The school board reorganizes after every board election each May.

Elder and Wade Watson were also sworn in at the beginning of the meeting. Elder was unopposed in his re-election bid for Place 2 while Watson won election to Place 1 over Tony Mooney.

The board canvassed the May 11 election at a special meeting Wednesday.

In other business:

  • Randy Ritzel with Apple Inc. presented Decatur High School with the Apple Distinguished School designation for the second year in a row. “What you’re doing at the high school and middle school is one of the best in the state,” he said. Decatur High School students and staff use Apple laptops while middle school students and staff use Apple iPads for instruction.
  • Parent Jeff Rowden expressed his support for the district’s swimming program and his desire to see it continue in the future.
  • The school recognized valedictorian Andie Keller and salutatorian Hannah Hubbard, along with the Decatur High School golf team for its successful season that ended in a trip to the state meet.
  • Christi Perkins at Carson Elementary was honored as educator of the month, and Nancy Cobb with the Decatur High School DAEP was honored as support staff employee of the month.
