Two new faces joined the Chico School Board this week, and one of them wasted no time in moving into a leadership position.
Newly-elected board members Donald Joe Clark and W.E. “Bill” Hand were sworn into Places 4 and 5, respectively, at Monday’s board meeting. Paul Cantrell was also sworn in to Place 3 after winning re-election May 11.
Moments after taking the oath, Hand was elected board president. Mark Tate was elected vice president, and Doug Bowyer retained his secretary position.
The board approved a Family and Career Sciences position. Superintendent Mike Jones said the high school used to have the position, but it had been eliminated due to budget cuts. He said that due to student interest, the school wanted to add the third strand of a career and technology offering. A teacher would have to be hired for the position, he said.
In other staffing issues, Jones said the school will add an assistant principal position for the high school. High school principal Lisa Slaughter, who moved to the post Jan. 4, has continued to serve as the district’s director of accountability/special programs campus intervention.
He also announced the resignation of two coaches: Ken Thompson at the high school and Jamie Roberts at the middle school.
In other business, the board approved the purchase of two iPad carts for the elementary school. Jones explained that the carts and iPads will stay at the school and be checked out for use by teachers in their classrooms.
Middle school principal contract back on agenda
The school board will once again consider the contract of middle school principal Maury Martin at a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.
Martin was the only administrator who did not have his contract extended Feb. 27. At that time, Jones said he did not have a recommendation on the contract for the board.
Martin’s current two-year contract expires at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.
Tuesday’s meeting will be followed by a workshop where the board will discuss possible bond items. The meeting and workshop will be held in Room 150 at Chico Elementary School, 1120 Park Rd.
