Group hopes for big bucks with auction

Decatur FFA Alumni hope to spark a bidding war at the organization’s silent auction next week.

The event is one of the group’s main fundraisers, and it will be held in conjunction with its awards dinner at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at the DHS cafeteria. The public is invited.

Many students will be honored, and Alumni President Marie Potter said they hope community members will join them in addition to members’ friends and families.

The barbecue meal, provided by Wise Electric Co-op, is free – but they hope to raise $5,000 through the silent auction and general donations.

“This year we’re giving away $5,000 in scholarships, and we’ve already spent more than $10,000 in travel expenses for the kids to travel across the state and nation to compete,” Potter said. “The Alumni pays for the kids to go to the state and national FFA conventions, and we also help with expenses to go to area competitions.”

They also help pay for the kids’ motel rooms, food and sometimes gas to get to and from these contests.

“At least 95 percent of what we raise goes back to the kids,” she said.

The featured item in the silent auction is a spring turkey or hog hunt for four in LaSalle County. Potter said the package includes food and lodging, and it’s valued at $4,000.

Other items include a $250 Tammy Kelly Photography gift certificate, a one-night stay for two at Courthouse Suites Bed and Breakfast on the Square in Decatur and gift certificates for haircuts, manicures and pedicures, plus miscellaneous items like jackets, knives and feed buckets.

If you would like to make a donation but are not able to attend next week’s event, call Potter at 940-577-0722 or mail your donation to Decatur FFA Alumni, P.O. Box 1037, Decatur, TX 76234.

The group has other fundraisers planned for later this year including selling fireworks June 24-July 4 and a buckle show set for Nov. 2. They also raise money through membership dues.
