Calling all grillmasters, lords of the rings and prize-winning pitchers.

The Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fundraiser, which includes a barbecue cook-off and washers and horseshoe tournaments, is Saturday at Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport.

Organizers of the event aim to make it a little larger every year. Last year, a sanctioned barbecue cook-off was added to the all-night off-highway vehicle riding. This year’s event introduces additional competition in washers and horseshoe tournaments.

There will also be kids activities and live music beginning at noon. Performers include Wise County’s Megan Nichols Adams, Cody Wells, Cody Robbins and the band Fezzent, capped off with a performance by Phil Hamilton at 6:30 p.m.

The park will be open for all-night riding.

Entry fee for the Lonestar Barbecue Society-sanctioned cook-off for beans, pork ribs, chicken or brisket is $75. There is $3,000 in guaranteed prize money. For more information, call Volunteer Firefighter Kyle Bloodworth at 940-372-0134.

Register teams of two for the horseshoe and washers tournaments by calling Fire Chief Terry Long at 940-210-9495 or Bridgeport Community Relations Manager Amber Fogelman at 940-683-3404. Cost is $20 per team per tournament. First place in each event receives 40 percent, and second place gets 20 percent.

Register that day at 11 a.m. for the horseshoe tournament, which begins at noon, and at 2:30 p.m. for the washers tournament that starts at 3 p.m.

Although the fire department receives funding from the city and county, the group of volunteers also relies on money generated from fundraisers like this to purchase equipment and meet other expenses.

“There are no paid employees on this department of 21,” Fogelman said. “The department is made up of men and women from the Bridgeport area who volunteer their time away from their families and jobs to assist with motor vehicle accidents, medical calls, fires and more.”

On average, the department responds to 55 calls a month.

“Bring out the family and support those who volunteer to assist you,” Fogelman said.

The department is also taking applications for volunteers. For more information, call Chief Long.
