A Paradise family’s home was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.
Wise County Fire Marshal Chuck Beard said Scott Smith was asleep in his home in the 200 block of Private Road 3360 west of Paradise when a smoke detector woke him up around 3:30 p.m.
“The smoke detector probably saved his life,” Beard said.
Beard said Smith was able to escape the house unharmed and went to a neighbor’s home to call for help.
Smith was the only person in the home at the time the fire broke out. His wife, Crystal, was picking up their 13-year-old son from school.
The Paradise Volunteer Fire Department responded, and Bridgeport and Decatur fire departments provided mutual aid. The first units to arrive reported flames and smoke already engulfing the double-wide mobile home.
The fire was extinguished around 5 p.m. but not before it destroyed the home and all of the family’s possessions, Beard said.
He was able to look through the remains of the house Thursday, but the cause of the fire remains undetermined and under investigation.
“The fire does not appear to be suspicious. It appears to be accidental,” Beard said.
It apparently started toward the middle and back of the home.
American Red Cross was called to assist the family, and Beard said the Smiths have family living in the area who are also helping them.
