Duane Durrett, dean of Weatherford College Wise County, will be named a Distinguished Alumnus of Weatherford College at its annual homecoming Saturday.
Durrett graduated from WC in 1968 and has been a WC employee for more than 38 years, having served in various teaching, management and executive positions. An accomplished drummer, he has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music, including Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Chuck Berry, David “Fathead” Newman, Ray Price and many others.
He founded the WC Jazz Band and directed it from 1970 until 1990, leading the first community college band ever chosen to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
Other honorees include Dr. Eldon Clary Jr., Class of 1960, dean of the College of Education at Arkansas Tech University, also a Distinguished Alumnus, and Dr. Christa Johnson Mars, Class of 1971, a surgeon in the Mayo Clinic in Wisconsin, Alumnus of the Year.
The honors will be presented at the Homecoming Awards Dinner, 5 p.m. Saturday in the lobby of the college’s new Academic Building in Weatherford. The public is welcome.
