DHS to present one-act play

Decatur High School Theatre Department will present its UIL one-act play, scenes from “A Company of Wayward Saints,” by George Herman, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at the Decatur High School Theater.

The production competed at district March 28 in Krum and advanced to Area. They performed in the area competition April 13 at Wilmer-Hutchins High School and at region April 18 at Texas A&M Commerce.

The script revolves around a company of commedia actors who are out of money and longing to return home. They meet a rich duke who is willing to finance their trip home if they present a play, based on an idea submitted by him, to his liking.

The company, which is tired of traveling and even more tired of each other, attempts to give the duke their interpretation of “the history of man.” As scene after scene falls apart, it takes Harlequin, the troop’s manager, to give them focus and reason to complete the performance.

The cast includes seniors Graham McCain, Kelsey Smith and Marcus Pinon; junior Paige Snow; sophomores Angela Ferris, Josh Santos and Kendall Hubbard; and freshmen Benji Walker and Alex Lambert.

The crew is led by senior Alex Carroll, the stage manager, and junior Erin Patterson, the assistant stage manager and light board operator. Sophomore Mark Harle works the sound board, and junior Paige Dickinson and sophomore Britni Gillespie are stage hands.

Senior Mindy Pittman, sophomore Hayley Eubank and freshman Renae White are the alternates who helped with costumes.

At each level of competition the company was praised for their ensemble work and handling of the script. They also took home numerous awards.

At district McCain, Smith and Walker were named to the All-Star Cast. Santos was Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and the tech crew was named Best Overall Tech Crew.

Smith and Walker were also named to the All-Star Cast at area competition, and McCain was Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. Carroll was named best tech.

At the regional contest, Smith was named to the All-Star Cast and McCain was Honorable Mention.
