Council to consider zoning change request for Sheriff’s Posse Grounds

When the Decatur City Council meets Monday evening, the biggest item on the agenda will be doing something most thought had been done years ago.

The Wise County Sheriff’s Posse approached the council recently to request permission to erect a lighted sign at the Sheriff’s Posse grounds on Farm Road 51 South. It was during the research for the sign that they realized the property was still zoned for single-family residences and not commercial.

The council granted the group a variance to go ahead and build the sign. Monday’s agenda items is a required public hearing on the zoning change that will allow the 98.7 acres to be reclassified from single family to thoroughfare business.

No opposition is expected.

Aside from that, the council is scheduled to proclaim March as American Red Cross Month and consider a request from the First Baptist Church for a 5K and 1K Fun Run to be held 3 p.m. April 7. The event will focus on family fitness.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 201 E. Walnut.
