Downtown Decatur will experience a little more joy this Christmas season.
The Decatur City Council Monday approved the Christmas JOY 5K run/walk to be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20.
Bruce Cunningham, one of the event organizers, was in attendance and discussed options for the starting and ending points for the race. The original plan had been for the race to begin and end at the Wise County Veterans Park a few blocks north of the Square, but there had been some discussion that it might benefit downtown businesses to have racers spend more time on the Square by using that point to begin and end the race.
“I think either one would be a good idea. I see advantages with both. … I’d be happy to go either route,” Cunningham told the council.
Police Chief Rex Hoskins said it would be more of a challenge as far as shutting down roads if the race started and ended on the Square. He suggested starting and ending the race in front of the Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace office a block north of the Square on State Street as an alternative.
Everyone seemed to be in agreement that would work best, and the council unanimously approved the run and the route.
In other business, the council appointed Amanda Cross to the Planning and Zoning Commission for a two-year term to expire October of 2015 and moved its first November meeting date from Nov. 11 to Nov. 18, to avoid the Veteran’s Day holiday.
