Community showers Wise Choices

In its inaugural year, a communitywide baby shower collected 3,816 diapers, 7,610 wipes, $185 in gift cards and $1,012.30 in cash donations for Wise Choices Pregnancy Resource Center in Decatur.

The drive also gathered baby bottles, blankets, pacifiers, diaper bags and clothing for the Christian-based, nonprofit agency which serves Wise County women and families facing unplanned pregnancy.

“I wanted more,” organizer Katrina Hines said. “But I’m not unhappy.”

As a missions project of a group at Sycamore Baptist Church in Decatur, the “baby shower” served a dual purpose.

“The objective was twofold,” Hines said. “We wanted to help Wise Choices out by collecting items for them, and we also wanted to make the community aware of what they’re about. If nothing more than that, our community is better educated on what Wise Choices does.”

With several logistical items taken care of that come with starting a new initiative, she hopes for better success in future years.

“I want to make this an annual event, and hopefully it grows each year,” she said.
