Wise County commissioners will meet for the first time Monday without County Judge Bill McElhaney.
McElhaney, who was serving his second term as county judge, died Oct. 14. Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin Burns is currently fulfilling the judge’s duties and will preside over the meeting.
The Wise County Fairgrounds Committee will give a report on their efforts to gain possession of the local fairgrounds. On Sept. 14, McElhaney announced in a commissioners meeting that the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse lease of the property would not be renewed.
Since that time, the committee, which includes Burns, Commissioner Danny White, Public Works Administrator Tom Goode and Sheriff David Walker, has been negotiating with Posse members, but the county still does not have keys or the schedule book for the facility.
The Public Works Department has begun some maintenance work on the property.
The regular meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the third floor conference room of the Wise County Courthouse in Decatur.
A public hearing will be held just before the meeting at 8:45 to discuss restricting truck traffic on Old Reunion Road in Precinct 1 and County Roads 1460, 1480, 1550 and 3001 in Precinct 2. Commissioners will consider taking action on this issue in the regular meeting.
