The Chico school board finally managed to hire an elementary school principal Wednesday.
The board voted 7-0 to hire Karen Decker, as recommended by Superintendent Mike Jones.
The unanimous vote was a drastic shift from the 3-3 split when Decker’s contract came up just a week earlier. At that June 26 meeting, trustees Doug Bowyer, Paul Cantrell and Mark Tate voted in favor of the hire while G.A. Buckner, Donald Clark and Bill Hand voted against it. Pancho Redwine was not present.
At the July 3 meeting the board also voted 5-2 to hire Tyler Raley as agricultural sciences teacher. Hand and Buckner voted against the measure.
Yet another vote was divided 4-3, as Hand, Buckner and Clark voted against hiring an architect but were overruled by Bowyer, Cantrell, Tate and Redwine. The architect will provide cost estimates for possible bond projects should the board decide to present a bond package in the future.
This was also the second time the architect’s hiring had been up for a vote. Trustees deadlocked on the issue June 17, also with Redwine absent.
Hand, Buckner and Clark voted against it, and Boywer, Cantrell and Tate were for it.
