Businesses’ trash pickup costs to spike

For the second year in a row, commercial customers in Chico will be paying more for garbage collection.

The good news? Residential rates will stay the same.

Mayor J.D. Clark said Progressive Waste Solutions (formerly IESI) originally proposed a 4 percent increase for both commercial and residential customers.

“Because residents had an increase last year, I opposed the across-the-board increase,” Clark said. “Progressive relented, and now the increase will be limited to commercial customers, effective May 1. Residential accounts will not be affected.”

The city council approved the 4 percent commercial rate increase request at Thursday’s meeting.

A year ago, the council approved a little over 2 percent rate increase requested by the company. The requests are based on the consumer price index (CPI), Clark said. The CPI measures price changes of goods and services, such as fuel costs.

Progressive Waste Solutions provides both garbage collection and recycling service for the city.
