A Boyd man was killed when he was struck by a vehicle during a foggy night last weekend.

James William “Pete” Sanders

James William “Pete” Sanders, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident in the 700 block of County Road 4699 between Cottondale and Boyd.

The accident happened around 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, according to Gary M. Rozzell, public information officer and senior trooper at the Texas Department of Public Safety office in Mineral Wells. Rozzell said a 1992 Chevy 1500 pickup driven by Joel Franklin Bennett, 19, of Lake Worth was northbound on the county road when it struck Sanders, who was sitting in the roadway.

The foggy conditions created low visibility, and Bennett was unable to see Sanders in the road before striking him, Rozzell said.

Bennett was not injured.

Information on why Sanders was sitting in the road was not available.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Mandy Hays was called to the scene and pronounced Sanders dead at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 22.

Department of Public Safety officers worked the accident with assistance from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

Funeral for Sanders is 2 p.m. today at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.
