For the third time in three months, Chico School Board members considered the contract of middle school principal Maury Martin.

After taking no action the first two times, on May 28 the board voted against a contract extension for Martin, who just finished his ninth year as principal at Chico Middle School.

The latest vote on the extension was two “for” and three “against” with two abstentions. Voting for the extension were the two newest board members, Bill Hand and Donald Clark. Doug Bowyer, Paul Cantrell and Mark Tate voted against the extension while G.A. Buckner and Pancho Redwine abstained.

The trustees split 3-3 on extending administrator contracts at their Feb. 21 meeting when Superintendent Mike Jones did not recommend extending Martin’s contract but did recommend extensions for the contracts of other administrators.

Martin was the only administrator whose contract was not extended at a Feb. 27 meeting. At that time, Jones said he did not have a recommendation on Martin’s contract for the board.

Martin now goes into the final year of his two-year contract, which expires at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.
