Assaults took place for years, affidavit states

A probable cause affidavit alleges that a Wise County Sheriff’s Office inmate work crew supervisor sexually assaulted a female under the age of 17 multiple times over a period of at least four years.

The affidavit, filed by Texas Ranger James Holland, contains information gathered from interviews with both Jeff Shurbet and the alleged victim, referred to as the “juvenile female” in the paperwork.

Shurbet, a resident of Paradise, told Holland that “he prayed to God and wanted to confess his sins” according to the affidavit. During the interview, Shurbet admitted to engaging in sex acts with the juvenile female on seven different occasions.

“Shurbet ended the interview by saying he was sorry for what he did and that he knew what he did was wrong,” according to the affidavit.

The next day, Holland interviewed the juvenile female who said that the sexual acts possibly began before she was 11 years old. She said she was forced to submit to sexual encounters “once or twice a week for at least approximately the preceding four years.” At times, the sexual encounters happened almost daily, the alleged victim said in the affidavit.

The female juvenile estimated that she had been forced to have sexual encounters “hundreds of times” with Shurbet.

Shurbet was arrested Friday and booked into the Wise County Jail for seven counts of sexual assault of a child, each a second-degree felony, and one charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony. The aggravated sexual assault charge was filed due to at least one of the alleged sexual encounters occurring when the victim was younger than 14 years old.

Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson set bond at $75,000 for each second-degree felony and $120,000 on the first-degree felony charge for a bond totaling $1,170,000. Shurbet remained in the Wise County Jail late Tuesday.
