2 injured in midday wreck

Two people were transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth after the small pickup they were traveling in was hit broadside on U.S. 81/287 south of Decatur.

The wreck happened around noon Friday.

The driver, Michaela Nelson, 19, and passenger Rebeca Black sustained head injuries. Rescue personnel at the scene said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The driver of the passenger car that hit them, Dennie Darnell of Alvord, was not injured.

According to witnesses, Darnell was southbound on the highway when Nelson attempted to cross over from County Road 4228 in front of NRS.

Darnell, who said he was driving about 70 mph, was not able to stop and t-boned the driver’s side of the pick-up.

“I’m amazed, and so thankful, they’re OK,” Darnell said.

Wise County EMS, Decatur Fire Department and state troopers responded.

An off-duty medic also rendered assistance.
