SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS – Applications for Bridgeport Spirit of Christmas are available at the public library. The deadline to return applications to the library is noon Wednesday, Nov. 13. Applications returned after the deadline will not be accepted.

BIG CATS – Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) in Bridgeport is having its third annual fall festival Nov. 16-17. It will include raffle prizes, games and prizes for kids, the opportunity to give the cats presents and pumpkins to play with, photos, special tours, cookies, cider and tiger tug-of-war (for ages 18 and up). CARDS IN THE PARK – Bridgeport Parks and Rec’s seventh annual Christmas Cards in the Park will be displayed Friday, Nov. 22, through Monday, Jan. 6, in Harwood Park. There is no fee, and it is open to everyone on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call 940-683-3480 for more information.

RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN – The Bridgeport Salvation Army Unit is looking for bell-ringers for the Christmas 2013 Red Kettle campaign. One-hour slots are available 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 2, 6, 12, 18 and 21 at Wal-Mart; and 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays from Nov. 30 to Dec. 22, at Brookshire’s and Market Place. GOLF TOURNAMENT – DHS Golf Booster Club Tournament is Saturday, Nov. 23, at The Club at Runaway Bay. Registration begins at 10 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $400 per four-person team and includes mulligans, lunch and door prizes. All proceeds benefit the DHS Golf teams. RINGERS WANTED – Bell ringers are needed for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign at Wal-Mart in Decatur this holiday season. Ringers are needed daily from Thanksgiving to Christmas. ANNUAL DINNER – The fifth annual Paradise Chamber of Commerce dinner is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at First Baptist Church of Paradise. TOWN HISTORY – The Rhome Public Library has reprinted the book, “Rhome, A Pioneer History” by Catherine Troxell Gonzalez encompassing the history of early settlers and families in Rhome and Wise County. It includes many historical pictures of people and places, and it includes a lot of family history. The paperback book can be purchased at the library, 265 W. BC. Cost is $20.


SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS – Applications for the South Wise Spirit of Christmas are available at Rhome City Hall, 105 W. 1st St., and are due Wednesday, Nov. 13. The program provides toys and some necessities to children in need in Rhome, Aurora, New Fairview and others in the 76078 ZIP code.

ESTATE SEMINAR – Aging Wisely presents Managing Your Estate 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Weatherford College Wise County. The speaker is Richard M. Barron. He specializes in elder law and veterans, Alzheimer’s care, hospice care and how to plan for these events in the midst of a crisis. EXPERIENCE WORKS – Experience Works helps low-income seniors with multiple barriers to employment get the training they need to find good jobs in Decatur and Wise County. Experience Works is a national, charitable, community-based program. Originally named Green Thumb and chartered in 1965 as a small, rural demonstration program, Experience Works has grown to be the nation’s leading provider of training, employment and community service for low-income older people. DRIVERS NEEDED – Metroport Meals On Wheels in Roanoke needs drivers. The organization serves southwest Wise County including Aurora, Newark, Boyd and Rhome. Meals are picked up from Tater Junction and delivered during the lunch hour Monday through Friday. Drivers may volunteer one day a week or just a few days per month. SHOT CLINIC – The November immunization clinic at First United Methodist Church in Decatur has been cancelled. The next clinic is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the church. For more information, call 940-665-6397.


WISE COUNTY PLAY – Northwest ISD students and community members will perform “Far and Wide,” an original play produced by NISD, which tells the story of a young family who makes Wise County their home. Performances are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, at Chisholm Trail Middle School (583 FM 3433 in Rhome). Salt Creek, a Southern bluegrass band, will perform prior at 6:15 p.m. The performance is free, but tickets are required as seating is limited. For more information, call 817-215-0159.

RENAMING CEREMONY – The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees, administrators and agricultural science department invite the community to celebrate the official renaming ceremony of the district’s agricultural science center 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. The ag building is located at 1960 Texan Drive in Justin.

THANKSGIVING CLOSINGS – Northwest ISD offices and campuses will be closed Nov. 25-29 for Thanksgiving break. Classes resume Monday, Dec. 2.
