TEEN READING – The Alvord Public Library is hosting a come-and-go Teen Reading Club every Wednesday through Aug. 21 for adolescents entering the seventh through 12th grades. At any point during the month-long event, go to the library at 106 Franklin St. to register, complete a reading log, suggest books to add to the library’s collection and recommend books to other teens. There will be goodies available, and each participant will be entered in a drawing for a Google Play gift card at the end of the program.

BOYD

LITTLE LIBRARY – Free Little Library in Boyd is now open outside the Boyd ISD Early Childhood Building (behind Allsup’s). It’s open to the public, and the books are free. You can take one and leave one at any time. The community project is organized by Texas Neighborhood Services-Head Start Boyd to promote school readiness for children under 5.

SOCCER SIGN-UPS – Boyd Youth Association is having soccer registration 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 17, at the middle school gym. Cost is $65.

BRIDGEPORT

BENEFIT ACCOUNT – A benefit account for the family of Rocio Gonzalez of Bridgeport has been established at First Financial Bank in Bridgeport. The 25-year-old single mother of two was seriously injured in a car accident on U.S. 380 in Denton County early Saturday morning.

SOCCER SIGN-UPS – Bridgeport Youth Association will have soccer registration 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Ave. Registration fee is $60.

CHAMBER LUNCHEON - The Bridgeport Area Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon is 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Ave. Jim Vollmer of Employer Benefits Solutions, will give a program on the affordable healthcare act, and Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson will give a special presentation on new rules for civil court filings. AUTHOR VISIT – Historian and author Dr. J’Nell Pate will discuss her most recent book, “Arsenal of Defense: Fort Worth’s Military Legacy” at the Bridgeport Historical Society meeting 12:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Weatherford College Wise County lecture hall. The public is welcome.

GED TESTING – Bridgeport ISD will administer the GED test for the last time Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 19-20. Pre-register by Thursday, Aug. 15. Weatherford College Wise County will administer the test beginning in September.

BENEFIT SOFTBALL – A co-ed softball tournament benefiting Bridgeport eighth-grader Shannan White is Saturday, Aug. 17, at Lawdwin Ballfields in Bridgeport. The event includes a concession stand and T-shirts for sale. Register your teams by calling Chris Peck at 940-613-9921. White has been hospitalized at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth for about a month after having a seizure. She underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor July 2 and had a stroke, which left her paralyzed on the left side.

GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Bridgeport Lions Club 33rd Annual Oil Man’s Golf Tournament is Saturday, Sept. 14, at The Club at Runaway Bay. There will be morning and afternoon tee times available. Cost for the four-man scramble is $400 per team. Hole sponsorships are $250, and organizers also appreciate door prize donations. BIKE RALLY – The Eighter From Decatur Bike Rally benefiting Raquel’s Wings For Life is Saturday, Sept. 7. NORTHWEST ISD

BACKGROUND CHECK – Parents and other volunteers who plan to work with children in NISD schools must have passed a criminal background check. It is available at www.nisdtx.org/volunteercheck.

ONLINE REGISTRATION – Students new to Northwest ISD may enroll online at www.nisdtx.org/enrollment. Registration for returning students begins Aug. 1. The process will replace the back-to-school packets issued on the first day of school.

CRAFT SHOW VENDORS – Vendors are sought for the Northwest High School baseball team’s Fall Craft Show 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Northwest High School. Booth fees, which include a chair, helpers to unload, parking and wifi, are $75 for a 10×10 space or $140 for 10×20. Additions include electricity for $10; tables for $10; and chairs for $5. Vendors may also pre-order a boxed lunch that will be delivered to the booths. Cost is $10 for a sandwich, chips, drink and dessert.
