Ulysses “Shorty” Bell, of Boyd, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at his home with his family around him.
Visitation is 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Donnelly’s Colonial Funeral Home in Irving, where he formerly lived. Funeral is 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, at the funeral home chapel.
Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving.
Born Dec. 4, 1917, in Moody to Jess and Ida Mae Bell, Shorty married his high school sweetheart, Grace Stephens, Oct. 16, 1937, in Moody. They were married 55 years before her death.
Shorty was also preceded in death by all three of his children: a stillborn son; son Daniel Bell; and daughter Donna Bell.
He was a faithful man of God, serving as a Sunday School teacher and deacon in the Baptist church all of his adult life. He served his country for 30 years, first in the Army in World War II and then in the Air Force Reserves. He retired from the service in 1977.
Shorty is survived by his granddaughter, Kimberlee Stokes and husband, Bobby, both of whom were his caregivers for the last 11 years; great-grandchildren Ryan, Colt and Kelsi; daughter-in-law Gwen Bell; sister Thelma Hatte of Temple; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
