George W. “Bill” Long Jr.

George W. “Bill” Long Jr., 91, a retired computer engineer, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Chico.

Funeral was Dec. 23 at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with the Rev. Nolan Rawle officiating. Burial followed at Cumby Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Stephen Whatley, Leland Whatley, Danny Cary, Coit Harris and Danny Price.

Bill was born July 3, 1922, in Danville, Ill., to George W. Jr. and Martha (Seward) Long. He married Anita Whatley April 21, 1973, in Houston. Bill was a computer engineer for Logicon Inc. and proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Bill’s hobbies included gardening and working in his yard, restoring furniture, metal and machine work and spending time with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Long; and his brother, David Long.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Whatley Long of Chico; sons George W. “Bill” Long III and wife, Glenda, of North Richland Hills, Brett B. Long and wife, Yvonne, of Rifle, Colo., and Blake W. Long and wife, Kathy, of Morrison, Colo.; grandchildren Melanie Retana and husband, Tony, Heather Long, Katy Long and MacKenzie Long; great-grandchildren Julian and Aubriella Retana; brother Seward Long and wife, Jodi, of Decatur, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Foundation, American Cancer Society or the Chico Volunteer Fire Department.
