David Compton Whale

David Compton Whale, 93, a retired teacher, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Decatur.

Memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Cuba Road Church in Bridgeport.

Mr. Whale was born June 4, 1920, in Gainesville to Lindsay Lee and Madge (Evens) Whale. He married Frances Geneva Gardner in 1958 in Seattle, Wash., and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Francis Whale of Decatur; daughter Linda Kay Whale Vargas of Decatur; sons Glen David Whale of Minnesota, Jerry Lee Whale of Texas and Thomas Whale of Washington; grandchildren Kenneth, Raquel and Nicolas Vargas, Kenneth Houchens, Michelle Gudmunson, and Tanya, Shawn, Alexander, Michael, Owen and Tayla Whale; great-grandchildren Austin, GeorgeAnna, Madison, Isabelle, Olivia, EvaMarie and Lola; brothers Thomas and James Whale, both of Oregon, and Wesley Whale of Washington; his first wife, Aleita Bell Houchens of Decatur; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Whale was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Lee Kuykendall and Helen Loyd; and daughter Hila Whale.
