WRECK VICTIM CRITICAL – A Paradise man flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after a fiery one-vehicle wreck late Monday night in Paradise was listed in critical condition late yesterday afternoon. The accident occurred just before midnight on School House Road, near Private Road 3484, in Paradise. Investigators said Joseph Anthony Hake, the driver of a Ford F-150 “overestimated the curve,” lost control and struck a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to go up in flames. Injuries included possible second-degree burns to the abdomen area.

WEEKEND OF HEALING – An extended weekend of “spiritual healing” is planned Thursday through Sunday at Elm Creek Park in Alvord. Events begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and will include music, worship and speakers, including Alvord youth who have lost friends and parents who have lost children in a string of tragedies since November 2010. J. Reed Project Band will play Thursday night, and rEVOLution will play Friday at 7. Saturday’s events kick off with a bike rally at Full Armor Biker Church (see brief below), and the park activities begin at noon with bounce houses and a variety of musical performances. Two services are planned for Sunday: one at 10:30 a.m. and one at 6 p.m.

READERS NEEDED – Volunteers are needed for a reading of the U.S. Constitution at 1:30 p.m. Monday Sept. 17 at Wise County Veterans Memorial Park in Decatur. For information call Sally Pegues at (940) 627-5452.

PIONEER DAYS – Parade entrees and applicants for the Ugly Man Contest and the Little Miss Pioneer Pageant are needed for Rhome Pioneer Days, which is scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Chico Athletic Booster Club will host a golf tournament Saturday at the Bridgeport Country Club. Shotgun start is 8 a.m., with registration beforehand. MELODRAMA POSTPONED – The Wise County Historical Society has postponed its rendition of the melodrama “The Shagwood Secret” until Oct. 13, due to not being able to obtain two male actors. BIKING FOR BREAST CANCER – The third annual Biking for Breast Cancer fun run and benefit concert is Saturday, Sept. 29. Registration is 10 a.m. at Decatur Power Sports with live music following at Bono’s Saloon featuring Jeremy Martin Band, Brandon Gentry, Jamie Richards, Hollow Point, Dusty Baker, Fezzent, Terry Razor, Colt West and Brandon Jenkins. Cost is $25 per bike entry (includes entrance to concerts), $5 for extra poker hand and draw cards and $10 for concert admission for public. There will be cash prizes and a silent auction. The calendars feature artwork from local special needs individuals, and proceeds go toward building a special needs baseball field equipped for persons of all disabilities. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The fifth annual Bryan Ledet Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is Saturday at the Runaway Bay Country Club. Registration is 7:30 to 8 a.m. with an 8:30 shotgun start. It’s a four-man scramble and costs $340 per team or $85 per individual. There will be prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive and a $5 bull’s-eye. BIKE RUN AND RALLY – Full Armor Biker Church is sponsoring a bike run and rally, Riders of the Caribbean 2, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Elm Creek Park in Alvord. Registration at 9 a.m. and a 10 a.m. start is at the church, 3988 N. U.S. 81/287, just outside Alvord. Cost is $25 per bike. Prizes include a 42-inch flat screen TV, a Ruger P90 and more. Proceeds benefit missionaries Donnie and Dee Fitts.

PARADISE HAS TALENT – The Paradise Historical Society is looking for talented amateurs to compete in the first Paradise Has Talent Competition at the Main Street Festival Sept. 29. The contest is limited to 15 entries, and prizes of $150, $100 and $50 will be presented to the top three acts. Entry forms and guidelines can be found at paradisehistoricalsociety.com. SWAP MEET TIME – For the second year, the 45th annual Southwest Swap Meet will bring thousands of antique car enthusiasts to the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse Grounds in Decatur. The event opens Friday and runs until 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s expected to have at least 1,200 vendor spaces, each with 80 percent of the contents automotive-related. Local charitable groups such as the Lions Club and churches will operate food booths of all types. Admission is free.
