SECRETARY OF STATE VISITS – Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade visited Decatur Tuesday as part of a final swing through the state before the Nov. 6 election. The state’s top election official thanked local officials for their work in registering voters and setting up elections and encouraged people to vote. Lanny Noble, Wise County elections administrator, hosted Andrade and a couple of aides at his office. Andrade said Texas has reached a record number of registered voters. As of Monday, there were 13,594,264 voters registered in Texas – and that number will likely increase once all the applications submitted by Oct. 9 are processed. Early voting begins Monday.

IPAD PURCHASE – The Chico School Board Monday approved the purchase of 150 Apple iPads for the middle school and a cart of 30 iPads for the elementary. Each middle school student will be issued an iPad, while elementary students will have use of iPads that will stay at the school and be checked out by teachers for use in the classroom. The iPads approved for purchase Monday should be issued to students in January. High school students received iPads last month.

CRUISIN’ DAYS – Newark Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary will hold the 25th annual Cruisin’ Days this weekend. Friday night features a carnival (which goes on all weekend by the fire hall) and live music by Dakota Burns. Saturday begins with a parade at 10 a.m., followed by BINGO at 11 a.m., classic car show at noon, barbecue dinner at 5:30 p.m., fire department award ceremony at 7 p.m. and a dance at 8 p.m. The carnival and midway continues noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. CHICO FEST PAGEANT – The Lil’ Miss and Mister Chico Fest Patriotic Pageant is open to newborns to kids age 10. The categories are Baby Best, 0 to 12 months; American Duke and Duchess 1 to 2 years; Patriotic Prince and Princess, 3 to 4 years; American king and queen, 5 to 10. The festival is Saturday on the Chico Square, with the pageant beginning at 11 a.m. Deadline to enter is Friday. Call Mercy Stanfield at (940) 210-9694.

YOUNG ELEMENTARY NIGHT – Thursday is Young Elementary Night at Cici’s Pizza in Decatur. Ten percent of the proceeds of dine-in or take-out between 4-9 p.m. will benefit the school. Tell the cashier at time of payment that you want to support Young Elementary.

OFFICE CLOSED – U.S. Forest Service District Office of the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands will be closed today for staff development. The office will resume normal operations Thursday.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS – Paint the Town Pink is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the Square in Decatur. Lunch will be available with special prices for those wearing pink. There will be a bake sale, silent auction, pink line ceremony and special promotions with local businesses. All proceeds benefit Mary’s Gift and Women’s Services at Wise Regional, which provides mammograms and cervical cancer screenings to underserved women in Wise County. LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE – Chico Library is hosting an open house 6 p.m. today to showcase recent renovations. There will be refreshments and door prizes.

COLONIAL DRESS – The John B. Denton chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution invite the public to their next meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wise County Heritage Museum. The speaker will be Carolyn Schwiewe, who makes authentic colonial clothing. She will tell how she adheres to the processes and design used by colonial seamstresses, and some of her dresses will be modeled.

FAREWELL RECEPTION – The city of Decatur is hosting a going away reception for Librarian Cecilia Barham 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center. Her last day at the Decatur Public Library is Oct. 26.

SPOOKTACULAR – Bridgeport Spooktacular Fall Fest, sponsored by the city’s parks and recreation department, is 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Bridgeport Community Center, 1102 Lawdwin Ave. The free event includes candy, games, inflatables, face painting, goody bags and balloon animals.

COLLEGE NIGHT – Parents and students are invited to College Night at Weatherford College Wise County 5 to 7 tonight. More than 40 colleges and universities from across Texas and the Southwest will be in attendance. The college is at 502 Big Sandy Court, just outside Bridgeport.
