ELECTION RESULTS – President Barack Obama won re-election in a close race nationally yesterday. He didn’t get much help from Wise County, however, as local voters went with his opponent, Mitt Romney, by a margin of 83 percent to 16 percent (17,178 to 3,219). On the local level, voters approved the abolishment of the county surveyor position by a vote of 8,163 to 6,800. Northwest’s $255 million bond issue was approved by voters, although Wise County residents voted 55 percent against the bond. Overall, voter turnout was 58.64 percent in Wise County. ALVORD COACH COMMITS SUICIDE – Students and staff in the Alvord school district are mourning a coach and coworker this week. According to the Montague County Sheriff’s Office, teacher and coach Danny Thomas, 54, took his own life Monday afternoon near Nocona. Chief Deputy J.T. Mitchell, with the Montague County Sheriff’s Office, said Thomas’ body was found by hunters about 3:15 p.m. next to his vehicle on Brookmole Road, west of Nocona. Although they are awaiting the official ruling from the medical examiner, Mitchell said it appeared Thomas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was found at the scene, but the type of gun was not released. Graveside service for Thomas is 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Nocona Cemetery, and visitation is 7-8 tonight at Scott-Morris Funeral Home, 212 East Oak St., in Nocona. PLY PROJECT – The Bridgeport City Council Tuesday approved an amended agreement between the Economic Development Corp. and U.S. Ply reflecting dates pushed back because of the merging of the Texas Office of Rural Affairs into the Texas Department of Agriculture and revisions to the contract form. The council also approved a contract with TDA for the construction of natural gas infrastructure and an agreement with the company outlining its responsibility in the process.
TRIAL CANCELED – The Precinct 3 jury trial set for 1:30 p.m. today has been canceled.
STEP OUT FOR DIABETES – Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson and her friends and family will be participating as the Wise Walkers in Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes Saturday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. TALENT SHOW – The Wise Country Fall Out is 7 p.m. Saturday at the Wise County Heritage Museum. Thirteen contestants will compete for first, second and third place. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children age 5 to 12, and children 4 and under free.
