MALONE SPEAKS — In a jailhouse interview with the Messenger yesterday, David Malone said he murdered girlfriend Samantha Jo McNorton of Sunset after she told him she had cheated on him. “I lost it,” he said. “I kind of had an out of body experience when I was there. Satan was there. He told me why I was there. He told me the reason why I met her, because he wanted her.” The arrest warrant affidavit states that Malone killed McNorton “by cutting and stabbing her with a knife and strangling her with his hands.” Malone said he killed McNorton off Farm Road 920 in South Wise County and then buried her body near Greenwood. Malone remains in the Wise County Jail with a bond of $2 million. Read more in today’s Wise County Messenger.
HYDRO-EXCAVATION COMPANY TO MOVE HERE — The Decatur Economic Development Corporation (EDC) on Tuesday approved a $200,000 incentive grant to bring the national headquarters of H2X to Decatur. The company, which operates a fleet of specialized trucks that excavate with high-pressure water instead of backhoes or other digging equipment, will build a 12,000-square-foot shop and office building on Walnut Street in the northeast part of Decatur. It is currently based in Bayfield, Colorado. H2X President Mike Clark said the company expects to have between 15 and 40 employees in its Decatur facility. With the EDC board’s approval, the budget item will go on the Decatur City Council’s December agenda. Also part of the incentive package is $80,000 to pave an extension of Stratton Street on the property, to allow it to be platted. That money will go to the City of Decatur.
BRIDGE VANDALIZED — The newly-installed bridge on County Road 3214, just outside Bridgeport, was vandalized last week. Sheriff David Walker said the construction company’s track hoe was still on site, and someone drove it into the sides of the bridge, damaging it. Interim Precinct 4 Commissioner Glenn Hughes said inspection revealed there is no structural damage to the bridge, just cosmetic. “We’ll have to replace the guardrails and things like that,” he said. Hughes said the bridge should be open in the next few weeks, and in the meantime, Walker said there will be increased patrols in the area.
