WHITE CHRISTMAS, ICY ROADS – After the snow started to fall yesterday around noon, it didn’t take long for Wise County roads to become dangerous. Just before 5 p.m., one person was trapped when a pickup rolled over on U.S. 81/287 near Farm Road 407 in the northbound lanes. Firefighters and paramedics extricated the victim, and Wise County EMS transported him to Harris Methodist in Fort Worth. Another wreck with injuries was reported on FM 51, three miles north of FM 455 in the Slidell area, and there was another wreck on U.S. 81/287 at FM 730 near Karl Klement Ford. Between 5 and 7 p.m., there were several more accidents including a vehicle that spun into the median of U.S. 81/287 in front of AGvantage in Decatur, and a mini van that also lost control on 81/287 near FM 407. A one-vehicle rollover was reported on FM 718, and there was an accident and vehicle fire on FM 1810 at the Sandy Creek bridge. There were many other drivers who simply ran off the road or needed roadside assistance. Roads and bridges are still slick this morning, and driving is not advised unless necessary.
UPDATED WEATHER CLOSINGS – Due to icy conditions on the road, the following offices are closed: Bridgeport Library and municipal court (city hall is open), Wise County offices, Learning Ladder daycare, and Meals on Wheels. PLUNGING TEMPERATURES – Temperatures dropped throughout the day yesterday and into the evening. The temperature at 7:45 a.m. today was 18 degrees with a wind chill of 11. Today’s high is only expected to be around 36 and tonight’s low is expected to drop to 25. Wise County remains under a winter weather advisory until 9 this morning due to icy road conditions. No more precipitation is expected.
WRECK INJURES 1 – One man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident about 7:20 a.m. Saturday just north of Newark. Tyler Huffman, 30, was driving northbound on Farm Road 718 in a Crown Victoria when he hit the back of a pickup also traveling northbound. Department of Public Safety Trooper Gary Reid said he had just turned around and was about to stop the Crown Vic for speeding when it hit the pickup that was slowing down to turn left. The pickup driver, James Glover, 69, of Newark, had minor injuries but was not transported. Huffman was pinned under the dash in his vehicle, causing injuries to his legs. He was extricated by the Newark Fire Department and flown by CareFlite to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Trooper Reid said Huffman was conscious at the scene but didn’t remember details of the wreck. He told Reid he may have had a seizure.
OFFICE CLOSED – Wise Hope Crisis Center in Decatur will be closed through Jan. 1. The office will reopen on Jan. 2. The 24-hour Crisis Hotline will be answered at all times at (940) 626-4855 and advocates will be on call for urgent situations. In case of an emergency, call 911.
SOUTH WISE PANTRY – South Wise Services food pantry will be closed Thursday. The food distribution and clothes closet will resume operations Thursday, Jan. 3.
RUNAWAY BAY TRASH PICK-UP – There will be no trash pick-up in Runaway Bay today. Trash pick-up will be Friday instead.
CHICO TRASH PICK-UP – Chico trash pick-up the week of Christmas and New Year’s will be on Thursday, instead of Wednesday.
BRIDGEPORT TRASH PICK-UP – Trash pick-up in the city of Bridgeport will change this week due to the Christmas holiday. Tuesday’s collection will be today, Thursday’s on Friday and Friday’s on Saturday.
DUMP SCHEDULE – The Decatur dumpsite will be open today through Saturday. The Boyd, Chico and Cottondale dumpsites will be closed today and tomorrow and open Friday and Saturday. The Slidell dumpsite will be open Thursday through Saturday.
