BRAZILE WRAPS UP NO. 10 – Trevor Brazile wrapped up his 10th PRCA all-around world title Monday after only the fifth round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. The Decatur cowboy and his team roping partner, Patrick Smith of Lipan, placed in the top three in three of the first five rounds. The third-place finish Monday earned Brazile $10,895 and a lead of $138,180 over the second-ranked competitor, Bobby Mote, a four-time world champion bareback rider. The margin guaranteed Brazile his 17th gold buckle, and he’s now just one short of tying steer roper Guy Allen’s record of 18 gold buckles. The 10th all-around title further extends his own record. He broke Ty Murray’s record of seven in 2010. Brazile’s mark of seven straight all-around titles is also a record. Read more in the midweek Wise County Messenger on news stands today.

MORE MINERALS – County commissioners learned Monday that $200 million in mineral values were added to the appraisal rolls for 2009 through 2012. Auditor Ann McCuiston said with a 98 percent collection rate, that means an additional $742,420 in tax money for the county. The “windfall,” as it was described by County Judge Bill McElhaney, will allow the county to allocate extra funds to each precinct, put some in general fund and tuck some away for capital projects.
