SHORT WINS CONSTABLE RACE – Larry Short was elected Precinct 2 constable Tuesday, defeating Mike Andrews by a vote of 539 to 396 in the Republican primary runoff. Short will serve as the next constable for the precinct since the race did not draw a Democratic opponent. In the May 29 primary, Short received 46.5 percent of the vote in the four-person race with 574 votes, and Andrews received 20.3 percent of the total vote. This time around, Short received 57.65 percent of the vote compared to 42.35 for Andrews.
ALVORD MAN HURT IN WRECK - An Alvord man was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth after a one-vehicle accident early Wednesday morning on Farm Road 1810 near Chico. Joshua Garvin, 32, suffered serious injuries according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Bobby Marquez. The accident was reported by a passerby at 1:13 a.m. Garvin was westbound on FM 1810 in a Ford F250. The truck left the roadway, ran through a bar ditch and crashed into the rock entrance way of the Hanson plant about a mile east of Texas 101. Garvin was transported from the scene to Chico High School to meet Life Team 68.
TRAFFIC SPLIT – Traffic on U.S. 380 from Decatur to the Denton County line will be split Thursday. Westbound traffic will be on the north side, and eastbound traffic on the south. It will be restricted to one lane pending re-stripping, work on the inside shoulders and removal of crossovers. “Hopefully by September the project is completed, cleaned up and done,” Texas Department of Transportation Area Engineer Bill Nelson said.
COUNTY BUDGET WORKSHOP – Commissioners will have a special called meeting 9 a.m. today at the Sheriff’s Office training room. They will discuss elected officials’ salaries and receive the property tax rates. A budget workshop will begin at 10 a.m.
READY FOR SCHOOL – Boyd Elementary will hold pre-k enrollment and kindergarten readiness evaluations 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday. COMMUNITY CENTER OPEN HOUSE – The City of Chico will host an open house for its new community center, which is housed in the former elementary school at 400 South Hovey Street, at 6 p.m. Saturday. The space has been renovated to meet community needs and is available for rental. TEAM CAR WASH – The Bridgeport High School volleyball team is holding a car wash 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at James Wood Motors in Bridgeport. Funds from the carwash benefit the volleyball team, but they will be selling a “Guinn Special” meal that includes hot dog, chips and drink to benefit the Guinn family. There will also be a waterslide and sno cones for sale.
YOUTH CAR WASH – The Wise County Cowboy Church Youth will have a car wash 8 a.m. Saturday at Fresh Produce Market, 709 W. Walnut in Decatur. All proceeds benefit their youth camp.
RODEO QUEEN – The deadline to sign up for Wise County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Queen, Sweetheart and Little Miss contests is at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the posse grounds. Contestants must be between the ages of 3 to 18 as of Jan. 1, 2012, and be a resident of Wise County or attend a Wise County primary school.
