STILL NO FIRE MARSHAL – After an application process and background checks, only one candidate remains eligible for the county fire marshal position, but commissioners decided yesterday to re-advertise for the post at the recommendation of the search committee. County Treasurer Katherine Hudson said four candidates were submitted for background checks, two of which withdrew their names. Of the remaining two, one did not pass the background check, and Hudson said the two firefighters on the search committee weren’t comfortable with the remaining candidate. The post has been vacant for six months since former Fire Marshal Marc Dodd resigned in April.

FOSSIL, ROCK, MINERAL – The Wise County Fossil, Rock and Mineral Society meets 6:30 tonight in the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Main St. in Decatur.

COLLEGE TO HOST HEALTH FAIR – Weatherford College Wise County will host its first Health Fair 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the campus on U.S. 380 between Decatur and Bridgeport.

FALL FEST – Wise County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers of Wise County will have a Fall Fest 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Decatur Civic Center. Visitors will enjoy food, music and games, plus they’ll get to meet local emergency personnel.

WOMEN’S HEALTH EVENT – Texas AgriLife Extension-Wise County and the Friend to Friend Coalition is hosting a Friend to Friend – Staying Healthy Together event at 6 p.m. today at Weatherford College Wise County.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS – Paint the Town Pink is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the Square in Decatur. Lunch will be available with special prices for those wearing pink. There will be a bake sale, silent auction, pink line ceremony and special promotions with local businesses. All proceeds benefit Mary’s Gift and Women’s Services at Wise Regional, which provides mammograms and cervical cancer screenings to underserved women in Wise County. ALVORD FUNDRAISER – Alvord’s First United Methodist Church Women’s Group will hold the 29th annual “Lord’s Acre” program 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday to raise money for local groups, including Alvord Meals on Wheels, Alvord Cares, Alvord Elementary and Alvord Fire Department. The event will include a country store, garage sale, face painting, pumpkin decorating, apple bob, bean bag toss, tin can alley, guess how many, a turkey luncheon and a silent auction featuring an original portrait of a winning family by local artist Chance Foreman.

CLASS OF ’72 REUNION – The Decatur High School Class of 1972 is having its 40-year class reunion on Friday and Saturday. There will be a gathering at Reunion on The Square after the football game on the 19th, and on Saturday, the 20th, the reunion will be hosted at the home of Nathan Horner at 609 S. BREAST HEALTH SUBJECT OF TALK – Ellen Kilgore from the North Texas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation will speak at Weatherford College Wise County at 2 p.m. Friday as part of the “Aging Wisely” speaker series. The talk is titled “Breast Health 101″ and will take place in room No. 105. The campus is located at 5180 U.S. 380 between Decatur and Bridgeport.

LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE – Chico Library is hosting an open house 6 p.m. Wednesday to showcase recent renovations. There will be refreshments and door prizes.

OTAKU CLUB – Teens ages 13 and older are invited to the Decatur Public Library’s monthly Otaku (Manga) Club Meeting at 4 p.m. today. The winners of the 2012 manga art contest will be announced. BOOSTER CLUB – The Alvord Athletic Booster Club meets at 6 tonight at the Alvord High School Cafeteria.

RUNAWAY BAY COUNCIL – The Runaway Bay City Council meets at 7 tonight at City Hall to consider approving an annual lease on the TI90 Bobcat Compact Track Loader, a thermal imaging camera from the Lake Bridgeport Fire Department and a proposal from Turner Signs to replace various street entrance signs, among other routine items.

BRIDGEPORT COUNCIL – The Bridgeport City Council meets at 7 tonight at City Hall. Agenda items include approving street closures for various city-sanctioned events, a $250 hotel occupancy tax disbursement to the Bridgeport Historical Society, a bid for auditing services for fiscal years 2012 through 2016, a consultant agreement with Countywide Inspection Services for the city’s building official and a stipulation, agreed settlement and consent order with the Railroad Commission of Texas for a damage prevention docket concerning an alleged violation at 2000 Thompson St. on Aug. 7, 2011.

GRAVESIDE service for Hurley Palmer, 72, of Springtown is 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Cemetery. Coker-Hawkins is handling arrangements.

GRAVESIDE service for Verna Johnston Larson, 100, formerly of Bridgeport is 1 p.m. Wednesday at West Bridgeport Cemetery. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.
