SPECIAL MEETING – The Bridgeport City Council will have a special meeting at 7 tonight at City Hall to approve an agreement with Southwest Securities for financial advisory services and discuss the issuance and sell of $2.93 million in refunding bonds to refinance outstanding debt.

BENEFIT ACCOUNT – Donations to a benefit account for Kayla Morrow Nichols, 41, of Bridgeport can be made at any First Financial Bank. Nichols has been in a coma since Aug. 5. See related story in an upcoming edition of the Messenger.

CLASS REUNION – The 30th reunion for Decatur High School Class of ’82 is 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Reunion on the Square in Decatur. The class is hosting a multi-class reunion 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Decatur Civic Center for classes ’79-’85. Cost is $30 per person, payable at the door, and it includes dinner. CLASS OF ’77 REUNION – The Bridgeport High School Class of 1977 will have a 35th reunion 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the lake home of Sandra Culpepper Juarez, 229 CR 1742, in Chico. RAFFLE BENEFITING BASEBALL – The Boyd High School baseball team is holding a raffle to win a chance to experience a NASCAR ride at Texas Motor Speedway. The ride is four laps at speeds in excess of 160 mph in one of the Nextel Cup Race Cars. Winners will have through September 2013 to book the event. Tickets are $5 or five for $20. Tickets can be purchased through Friday, Oct. 5, at the Boyd High School and Boyd Middle School offices. Winners will be announced Oct. 5 at the Boyd High School football game.

CAR WASH – The Decatur 5th Grade Football/Cheer team is having a car wash 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Wise Orthopedics at 1713 S. FM 51 and is by donation only. If you would like to donate but cannot come by on Saturday, contact Alexia Steele at lsteele@nctosm.com.

ROUND UP SUNDAY – Morris Memorial United Methodist Church of Chico is hosting Roundup Sunday, Sept. 30. Sunday school is at 9:45 a.m. with worship at 11 a.m. and barbecue lunch to follow. The church is located at 302 S. Weatherford St. For more information, call (940) 627-2177.

NEW HOURS – Chico Public Library is extending its hours. Starting Monday, Oct. 1, the library will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

CHILI CONTEST – Entries are now being accepted for the first Great Bowls of Fire Chili Cook-Off and Tasting on Oct. 6 at the Bridgeport Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival. Entry fee is $50 per team and due to the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce by Friday, Sept. 28. All proceeds will benefit the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department. HOMECOMING PARADE – Alvord homecoming parade is 4 p.m. tomorrow starting at the high school and ending downtown followed by a pep rally. The theme is “A Trip through Time.” Float entries will be Stone Age, Medieval/Greek, Wild West, 50s, Hippies, and 80s. Line-up begins at 3:30 at the high school and football field parking lot. The Elementary PTO is also sponsoring a bike parade and encourages all children to decorate their bike in one of the themes. Bikes should be in place by 3:30 for judging. MUSIC NIGHT – Donations of $1 per person will be accepted for Wise Area Relief Mission (WARM) tonight at Reunion on the Square in Decatur. J.D. Clark will perform 8-10 p.m.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY – The Wise County Historical Society meets noon today at the Wise County Heritage Museum in Decatur. Members are encouraged to bring their own sack lunch and drink. Matt Joiner from Weatherford College Wise County will speak.

RETIREMENT RECEPTION – The public is invited to a come-and-go retirement reception honoring bookkeeper Karen Franks Hardee 10 a.m.-1 p.m. today at McMaster New Holland, 3365 U.S. 81/287 South, in Decatur.

FUNERALS – Service for Thomas John Upchurch Jr., 93, of Decatur is 2 p.m. today at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur with burial at Jonestown Cemetery.

FUNERAL for Clara C. Clay, 94, formerly of Decatur is 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at Coker-Hawkins.

SERVICE for Elaine Verhaagen, 69, of Alvord will be held at a later date. Coker-Hawkins is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Betty Jewell Killough Remmele, 79, of Paradise is 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Cottondale with burial at Cottondale Cemetery.
