ONE KILLED IN EARLY MORNING ACCIDENT– One person died in a four-vehicle accident about 5 a.m. today on U.S. 287 at Ramhorn Hill Road south of Rhome. Southbound 287 is expected to be closed for several hours, but as of 8 a.m., one northbound lane was open. DPS Trooper Lonny Haschel said an 18-wheeler was crossing 287 South, going east to turn into the northbound lanes, and was clipped by another 18-wheeler traveling southbound. The impact caused the driver of the southbound 18-wheeler to lose control, and he was ejected in the southbound lanes. His truck continued traveling driverless on U.S. 287 South, over the center median and across the northbound lanes before coming to rest in the east ditch of 287 North where it caught fire. While that was happening, the ejected driver was hit by multiple vehicles traveling southbound, the first of which was a pickup. The driver of the pickup lost control, crossed the median and came to rest just 30 feet from the 18-wheeler in the ditch of the northbound lanes. The pickup driver was transported to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur with non-life threatening injuries. The identities of those involved have not yet been released. In addition to DPS troopers, Rhome Fire Department and Boyd Police Department also responded to the accident. More information will be posted on wcmessenger.com as it’s available.
