BUDGET APPROVED – The Northwest School Board Tuesday approved a $150,791,310 budget for the 2012-2013 school year that includes a 3 percent raise for faculty, staff and administrators. It will be funded in part by a $1.375 tax rate – $1.04 maintenance and operations and $0.335 interest and sinking – for which the district held a public hearing at the beginning of the meeting.
TIRE FIRE – Several fire departments in south Wise County and one from Tarrant County responded to what was described as several thousand tires on fire near County Road 4845 north of Newark last night around 8:45 p.m. The fire sent a large column of black smoke into the air. Fire departments cleared the scene around 11:45 p.m.
BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT – The Samantha Jill Rogers Memorial Scholarship Fund will host its first 3-on-3 basketball tournament Friday at the Alvord High School gym. Check-in is at 4 p.m., and play begins at 5. Cost is $140 per adult team or $100 per youth team. All entries must be received by noon today. Divisions will be by age group, and division winners will receive prizes. Free-throw and three-point contest winners will also receive a prize. MUSIC IN THE PARK - City of Rhome will have Music in the Park 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Family Park on Virginia Lane. The event is free, promotes local businesses and will feature live music, bounce house, waterslide, horse shoes, face painting and free hot dogs and drinks.
ALVORD SCHOOL BOARD – The Alvord School Board meets at 7 tonight in the Administration Building, 100 Mosley Lane. Agenda items include an Internet safety policy, a dual credit partnership agreement with Weatherford College and TASB policy updates.
CITY HALL MOVE – Chico City Hall will be closed to the public today and tomorrow as the city staff relocates to the new offices at 400 South Hovey Street in the former elementary school. City Hall offices will be open to the public at the new location on Monday, July 2.
HEALTH FORUM MEETING - The Wise County Health Forum meets at 9 a.m. today at the Decatur City Hall Community Room. The agenda includes a presentation by Murvelle Chandler on the Wise County Assistance Network. There will be no meeting in July.
MOVIE IN THE PARK – The City of Boyd will have Movies in the Park night tonight at Snodgrass Park. The movie “Cars” will start at dusk. Weather permitting, bring your lawn chairs.
WCAN PRESENTATION – An informational presentation about the new Wise County Assistance Network is 2 p.m. today in the Wesley Center of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur. The Wise County Assistance Network (WCAN) is a real-time Internet communication network coalition to connect emergency assistance providers, care providers, charities and churches in Wise County. Anyone involved with this type of organization in Wise County is invited. WCAN is administered by the United Way of Wise County.
