FATAL ACCIDENT – A 40-year-old man was killed in a car accident south of Boyd early Sunday morning. Chad J. Demory of Boyd was driving north on Farm Road 730 South at 2:30 a.m. when his car left the roadway near County Road 4868, just north of Briar Road. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lonny Haschel said the 2000 Pontiac sedan hit a steel post when it left the roadway for unknown reasons. Demory died at the scene. Haschel said the accident is still under investigation. DPS was assisted at the scene by the Boyd Police Department and Wise County Sheriff’s Department.
EARLY VOTING, WEEK 2 – Numerous records were set in early voting last week, and since the second week of early voting is typically heavier than the first, more records could fall this week. On Friday, 1,119 people voted, including 678 at the Decatur Civic Center, 239 at Rhome City Hall and 202 at the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center. Early voting was also held Saturday at Walmart in Decatur, with another 622 votes being cast. That brings the first week’s total to 6,004. Voting continues 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today through Friday at the Decatur Civic Center and Bridgeport and Rhome locations.
RIDER WINS WORLD TITLE – Silvano Alves was named PBR World Champion yesterday at the Built Ford Tough Series World Championships at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. The native Brazilian, who calls Wise County home, is the first rider in PBR history to win the title back-to-back. In 2011, he was the first rider to win the World Championship the year after winning Rookie of the Year. Other Wise County riders finished in the top 20 for the season. They include No. 4 Valdiron de Oliveira, No. 6 Renato Nunes, No. 9 Marco Eguchi, No. 10 Fabiano Vieira, No. 13 Mike Lee and No. 18 Ben Jones.
FOOTBALL RESULTS – Bridgeport won the “Battle of Big Sandy” Friday with a 28-21 win over Decatur. Other scores included Jacksboro 40, Alvord 14; Boyd 48, Ponder 28; Collinsville 48, Chico 14; Northwest 52, Timber Creek 14 and Callisburg 44, Paradise 18.
