HERRING SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS – District Judge John Fostel Friday sentenced Timothy Herring, 22, of Azle to 20 years in prison after a jury had found Herring guilty of attempted capital murder on Wednesday. Herring was accused of attempting to run over a state trooper with a stolen tractor last summer. Herring faced up to 99 years in prison for the first degree felony charge. HELICOPTER CRASH KILLS LOCAL MAN – Rusty Aaron, 26, of Decatur was one of three people killed Thursday night when the Robinson R44 helicopter in which he was riding crashed on a ranch in northern Kendall County. The site is within 20 miles of Fredericksburg. According to a Sunday report by KENS 5 in San Antonio, the other two victims were Kaci Fairchild, 29, and the pilot, 35-year-old Chester Monroe. Chief Deputy Matt King with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office said the trio had rented the helicopter from Veracity Aviation and were flying from Midland to Seguin when the crash occurred. Aaron was a 2005 Slidell High School graduate and was the son of Ray and Melinda Aaron of Decatur. He had been living in Central Texas, at Lake McQueeney, for about a year. Aaron’s funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery, and visitation is 6-8 tonight at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur. The family requests that memorials be made to the Clinton Pannell Memorial Scholarship Fund, 403 S. Washburn St., Decatur, TX 76234 or Montague County Cowboy Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1536, Bowie, TX 76230.
WEEKEND RAINFALL – Storms rumbled through Wise County late Saturday night. Rainfall totals included 1.22 inches in Decatur, 1 in Rhome, 0.82 in Alvord and 0.6 in Runaway Bay and Chico.
TOUGH FRIDAY – Only one local football team was victorious Friday night, and it took a last-minute field goal to secure that one. Northwest’s Cayden Ihrig hit a 24-yard field goal with seconds remaining to lift the Texans to a 24-21 homecoming win over Haltom. Other scores from Friday included Nocona 43, Alvord 0; Callisburg 48, Boyd 46; Krum 34, Bridgeport 14; Valley View 28, Chico 7; Gainesville 42, Decatur 21; and Bowie 50, Paradise 18. OFFICE CLOSED – U.S. Forest Service District Office of the Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands will be closed Wednesday for staff development. The office will resume normal operations Thursday.
DEMOCRATS TO MEET – Wise County Democrats meet 7 tonight in the second floor courtroom of the Wise County Courthouse in Decatur.
COLLEGE TO HOST HEALTH FAIR – Weatherford College Wise County will host its first Health Fair 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the campus on U.S. 380 between Decatur and Bridgeport. Nursing students will check blood pressure, vision and glucose levels and determine Body Mass Index (BMI). There will also be hearing tests, flu shots for $10 and displays by various area hospitals, nursing homes, rehab facilities and other health-related agencies.
WOMEN’S HEALTH EVENT – Texas AgriLife Extension-Wise County and the Friend to Friend Coalition is hosting a Friend to Friend – Staying Healthy Together event at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Weatherford College Wise County. The event is free, and attendees will learn the importance of mammograms and pap tests. They will also find out how to access financial resources and fully funded area services, and they will be able to visit retail and educational exhibits. There will be refreshments and door prizes. SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE – Chico Public Library has scholarship opportunities for Chico ISD graduates. The Lavonia Hawkins Scholarship Fund provides funding for Chico ISD grads who have completed their first semester of college toward a bachelors degree or higher in the field of education. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP – The Wise County Grief Support group will be held in the training room at the Wise County Sheriff’s Department for the next two meetings. Enter at jail entrance, and the training room is the first door on right.
YARD SALE – The Wise County Veterans Council and the North Texas Honor Guard will hold their annual yard sale 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Donations will be accepted 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today through Thursday at the DAV Hall on FM 51 South in Decatur next to the rodeo grounds. Call (940) 389-5399.
GIVEBACK DAY – Today is Wise County Special Needs Baseball – Miracle League of Wise County day at I-HOP in Decatur, from 5-10 p.m. WCSNB volunteers will be hostesses and will have flyers available for you to give your wait staff, and I-HOP will donate 20 percent to the organization. WCSNB is raising funds to build a baseball field that will accommodate all special needs players regardless of disability.

GRAVESIDE service for Verna Johnston Larson, 100, formerly of Bridgeport is 1 p.m. Wednesday at West Bridgeport Cemetery. Hawkins-Bridgeport is handling arrangements.
FUNERAL for Sandra Head, 77, of Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Decatur, is 10 a.m. today at Desert Valley Mortuary Chapel in Yuma.
