WRECK VICTIM IDENTIFIED – The victim in Thursday’s fatal accident on U.S. 81/287 south of Rhome was a local man, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Lonny Haschel. Haschel reported Saturday morning that the man who was killed was Antonio Garcia, 48, of Rhome. Garcia’s truck clipped another 18-wheeler driven by Michael McDade, 58, of Arlington at 4:40 a.m. Thursday in the southbound lanes of U.S. 81/287 at Ramhorn Hill Road. Garcia then lost control of his truck and was ejected into the southbound lanes of the road. His truck continued traveling driverless on U.S. 81/287 South, over the center median and across the northbound lanes before coming to rest in the east ditch of U.S. 81/287 North where it caught fire. While that was happening, the ejected driver was hit by multiple vehicles traveling southbound, the first of which was a pickup driven by Michael McBride, 58, of Arlington. After hitting Garcia, McBride lost control of his pickup, which crossed the median and came to rest on its side just 30 feet from the 18-wheeler in the ditch of the northbound lanes. McBride, who was wearing a seat belt, was transported to Wise Regional Health System in Decatur, and McDade suffered no injuries. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.
