PROVIDING A HELPING PAW TO NEWTOWN – A former Wise County Animal Shelter rescue dog will soon be headed to Newtown, Conn., to become the family pet of a young boy who survived the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School Dec. 14. The dog was picked up by the Pet Rescue Alliance in Virginia and will be named Soto in honor of the boy’s teacher, Victoria Soto, who died in the shooting. The golden retriever mix is expected to make the journey to her new family this week.

SWEARING IN – Wise County elected officials will be sworn in at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, in the District Courtroom at the Courthouse.

HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – Wise County Development Services (Public Works and 911 Addressing) will be closed today and tomorrow. Decatur dumpsite will be closed Tuesday (open today and Wednesday through Saturday). Boyd, Chico, and Cottondale dumpsites will be closed Wednesday (open Thursday through Saturday).

JP OFFICES CLOSED – Precinct 2 and 4 Justice of the Peace offices will be closed today and tomorrow and re-open for regular business hours Wednesday.

COUNTY OFFICES TO CLOSE – Wise County offices will be closed Tuesday for New Year’s Day. Some offices may close early today. The Wise County Appraisal District will be open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today.

BRIDGEPORT TRASH COLLECTION – Trash pick-up in the city of Bridgeport will assume its normal schedule today, but, starting New Year’s Day, will shift over a day – Tuesday’s collection will be on Wednesday, Thursday’s on Friday and Friday’s on Saturday.

BENEFIT – Chili’s will be giving back for “Milestones for Mikey” through Tuesday. A portion of all proceeds will be donated for all eat-in orders or take-out when his name is mentioned. Flyers with free dessert offer are available at Texas Insurance Agency in Bridgeport. Michael Bible was paralyzed in a motor vehicle accident on Oct. 3 and is in rehab at Baylor in Dallas.

RAINY DAY AHEAD – The rain is expected to continue, mostly this morning, then cloudy the rest of the day with a high near 47. It will be colder to begin the new year, with a high of 39 on New Year’s Day. Rhome reported 0.29 of an inch of rain overnight.

FUNERALS – Services for Robert Nobles, 80, of Decatur; Marjorie Cole, 83, of Rhome; and Douglas Patterson, 54, of Decatur are pending at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur.

GRAVESIDE service for Rhonda Al Ramahi, 44, of Paradise is 1 p.m. today at Liberty Cemetery in Erath County. Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for Susan Malinda Jackson, 48, of Denton is 2 p.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel with private burial at West Bridgeport Cemetery.

NO SERVICE is scheduled for William Underwood, 72, of Bridgeport.

SERVICE for Joseph H. Paul Jr., 75, of Paradise is pending at Christian-Hawkins Funeral Home in Boyd.

MEMORIAL service for Jenner G. Jones, 67, of Boyd will be held at a later date. Christian-Hawkins is handling arrangements.
