FIERY SUNDAY – Weather conditions were ripe for fires yesterday, and it certainly proved to be the case in Wise County. From noon to 2 p.m., local fire departments responded to five grass fires. Just after noon Sunday, Chico and Alvord fire departments responded to a controlled burn rekindle from the day before on Farm Road 1655, three miles north of Farm Road 1810 near Chico. Greenwood/Slidell and Decatur firefighters responded to hay bales on fire at Eagle Canyon Raceway, believed to have been sparked by a race vehicle. Boyd, Rhome and Cottondale firefighters battled an approximately five-acre grass fire on County Road 4680 near Boyd, believed to have been started by fireworks. It was under control and in mop up by 1:30. As those three units cleared that fire, they were dispatched to another fire on Kristi Lane, north of Boyd. Decatur and Newark were also dispatched to the blaze, which was started by a fire pit in the backyard of a home. Outside welding sparked a 15-acre blaze on County Road 1736. Sand Flat, Chico, Crafton and Bridgeport units responded.

And although Decatur’s Trevor Brazile finished third overall in team roping after leading for most of the competition, he did more than enough to win a seventh consecutive and 10th overall all-around gold buckle while competing in Las Vegas. Two more Decatur cowboys finished in the top 15. Clif Cooper finished the year ranked 15th in the world tie-down roping, and steer wrestler K.C. Jones ended the season 12th overall.
