FALL PREVIEW – A cool front brought rain and cooler temperatures to Wise County yesterday. Rainfall totals include 1.58 inches in Runaway Bay, 0.7 in Chico, 0.43 in Decatur, 0.4 in Alvord, 0.35 in Rhome and 0.1 in Greenwood. Rain continued to fall at 8 a.m. this morning, and rain chances will continue throughout the day into tomorrow. Today’s high is expected to be 73 degrees.
FOOTBALL FRIDAY – Five local games are on the schedule tonight. Decatur hosts Burkburnett, Iowa Park travels to Bridgeport, Boyd is at home against Godley, Alvord plays at Krum and Northwest hosts Midlothian. All games are at 7:30. DEMOCRATIC MEETING – The Wise County Democrats meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the Wise County Courthouse, second floor courtroom. Guest speakers will be Gwen York, Transport Workers Union, and Dave Robinson, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives District 12.
PEST TEST – A Pesticide Applicator License Class and Test is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The Texas License is for purchase of restricted use or state-limited-use pesticide or a regulated herbicide. This class is for those individuals who do not currently have a pesticide applicator license, but would like to get one. You must pre-register and pick up your study manuals. Seating is limited. OFFICE CLOSED FOR WEEK – The Veterans Service Office will be closed Sept. 17-21 for fall training. The office will reopen Sept. 24 at 8 a.m.
CONVENTION – The Wise County Farm Bureau will host its annual members meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. The dinner will be held at the Church of Christ in Decatur, and Dale Bullock, associate director of field operations for Texas Farm Bureau, will be speaking. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The fifth annual Bryan Ledet Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is Saturday at the Runaway Bay Country Club. Registration is 7:30 to 8 a.m. with an 8:30 shotgun start. It’s a four-man scramble and costs $340 per team or $85 per individual. There will be prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive and a $5 bull’s-eye. Cash will be given to 1st, 10th and 20th places. A hole-in-one wins a 2012 Chevy Sonic. SWAP MEET TIME – For the second year, the 45th annual Southwest Swap Meet will bring thousands of antique car enthusiasts to the Wise County Sheriff’s Posse Grounds in Decatur. The event opens today and runs until 5 p.m. Sunday. It’s expected to have at least 1,200 vendor spaces, each with 80 percent of the contents automotive-related. Local charitable groups such as the Lions Club and churches will operate food booths of all types. Admission is free.
WEEKEND OF HEALING – An extended weekend of “spiritual healing” continues today and goes through Sunday at Elm Creek Park in Alvord. Events begin at 7 p.m. tonight and through the weekend there will be music, worship and speakers, including Alvord youth who have lost friends and parents who have lost children in a string of tragedies since November 2010. Saturday’s events kick off with a bike rally at Full Armor Biker Church (see brief below), and the park activities begin at noon with bounce houses and a variety of musical performances. Two services are planned for Sunday: one at 10:30 a.m. and one at 6 p.m.
BIKE RUN AND RALLY – Full Armor Biker Church is sponsoring a bike run and rally, Riders of the Caribbean 2, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Elm Creek Park in Alvord. Registration at 9 a.m. and a 10 a.m. start is at the church, 3988 N. U.S. 81/287, just outside Alvord. Cost is $25 per bike. Prizes include a 42-inch flat screen TV, a Ruger P90 and more. Proceeds benefit missionaries Donnie and Dee Fitts.
CHICO GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Chico Athletic Booster Club will host a golf tournament Saturday at the Bridgeport Country Club. Shotgun start is 8 a.m., with registration beforehand.
