FIRST FREEZE POSSIBLE – The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for Wise County in effect from 1-9 a.m. Saturday. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall to 30 to 32 degrees across the area after midnight into early Saturday morning. These conditions could kill sensitive plants, and residents are advised to protect tender vegetation. Automatic sprinkler systems should also be turned off to avoid creating ice patches on nearby paved surfaces. Today’s high is expected to be 56 with highs in the low to mid 60s this weekend. The temperature in Decatur at 7:45 a.m. was 41 degrees.
VOTED YET? – Yesterday might have been the lightest day of early voting so far, but not by much as voters continue to cast ballots at a record pace. Yesterday’s total of 932 included 157 at the Bridgeport Law Enforcement Center, 596 at the Decatur Civic Center and 179 at Rhome City Hall. Early voting for the Nov. 6 general election continues 8 a.m.-5 p.m. today at the three locations. Also, polls will be open at Wal-Mart in Decatur 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.
‘BATTLE’ HIGHLIGHTS FOOTBALL LINEUP – The annual “Battle of Big Sandy” football game between Bridgeport and Decatur is tonight at Bull Stadium in Bridgeport. Other local games include Ponder at Boyd, Paradise at Callisburg, Alvord at Jacksboro, Collinsville at Chico and Timbercreek at Northwest. All games are at 7:30. GOLF TOURNAMENT – The Decatur Junior Woman’s Club 21st annual “Park Classic” Golf Tournament is Friday, Nov. 2, at the Decatur Country Club. Registration is at 11 a.m. and play begins at noon. Entry fee for the four-person team scramble is $300 or $400 for all-inclusive that includes two mulligans per person ($5 each) and poker run entry ($15 per person). Payout to winner is $250, and cash prizes will be awarded to first, second, seventh, last, longest drive and closest to the pin. FISH FRY – The annual Alvord Volunteer Fire Dept. Fish Fry Fundraiser is 5 p.m. Saturday at the fire station followed by entertainment by J.D. Clark and Dakota Burns. The event will also feature activities for kids and live and silent auctions. The department is celebrating 61 years of service.
FALL FESTIVAL – Eagle Drive Baptist Church in Decatur will have a fall festival 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There will be games, free food and live Christian music.
FALL PANCAKES – Morris Memorial United Methodist Church of Chico will have a fall bazaar and pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. Saturday. The bazaar includes crafts, gift baskets, homemade baked goods and a giveaway of a 39-inch flat screen television. Cost of the breakfast, cooked by the Chico Dough Boys, is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. The church is located at 302 S. Weatherford St.
HOWL-OWEEN PARTY – Kids can trick or treat 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Wise County Animal Shelter. The event will include popcorn, candy and games. Wear your costumes.
TRUNK OR TREAT - First United Methodist Church Decatur will host a Trunk or Treat 6 p.m. Saturday.
ZUMBA FUNDRAISER – Wise County Special Needs Baseball is hosting a zumba fitness Dance for the Field Halloween fundraiser 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Decatur ISD Multipurpose Building, 1201 W. Thompson St. The event is hosted by zumba instructor Simon Kao, and there will be a costume judging with cash prizes, raffles, T-shirts and more. Tickets are $12 at the door, $10 in advance. For more information, call (940) 577-1848. All funds raised will go to build a Miracle League baseball field to accommodate all players regardless of disability.
DECATUR SPIRIT – Applications for the Decatur Spirit of Christmas program are now available at all Decatur financial institutions. Deadline to return the applications is Thursday, Nov. 8.
RETIRED EDUCATORS MEETING – Wise County Retired School Personnel will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the Decatur Civic Center. Speaker will be Bill Barnes, state legislative chairperson, who will discuss important legislative matters. Call (940) 575-2341 to register.
SHELTER CLOSED – Wise Hope Crisis Center will be closed today. In case of emergency, call 911. The 24-hour hotline will be answered at (940) 626-4855 to assist those in need. The office will reopen Monday at 8:30 am.
SLIDELL FALL FESTIVAL – Slidell ISD will host its annual Fall Festival tonight at the high school. Gates and concessions open at 5 p.m. Ticket sales begin at 5:30 with booths open 6-8 p.m. Drawings will be held beginning at 8 p.m.
FALL FEST – The Paradise PTO Fall Fest is 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Paradise Elementary School. There will be food, games, bingo, hay rides and a silent auction.
FUNERALS – Service for Kemper Walker, 75, of Bridgeport is 2 p.m. Monday at Ascension & St. Marks Episcopal Church in Bridgeport with burial at East Bridgeport Cemetery. Family visitation is 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Jones Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
SERVICE for Joyce Wolff, 75, of Paradise is pending at Jones Family Funeral Home.
FUNERAL for Aline “Dora” Manire, 79, of Decatur is 10:30 a.m. Monday at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur with burial at Oaklawn Cemetery. Family visitation is 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
SERVICE for Juana Leon Munoz, 58, of Decatur is pending at Coker-Hawkins.
