The Northwest Texans outran Grand Prairie Thursday night, in a 42-17 season-opening win at the Gopher Bowl.
Dakota Chavis led the Texans with three touchdowns and 104 yards. Dzosa Nikolo Kangkolo added one touchdown and 73 yards.
“Chavis and Kangkolo had a good game,” said Northwest head coach Bill Patterson. “And the kids blocked good up front.”
Northwest pulled ahead for good only 37 seconds into the game. On the second play from scrimmage quarterback Draze Lawliss hit Dylan Stubbe with a 58-yard pass.
Lawliss finished 6-for-14 for 150 yards.
The Texans scored on their first three possessions. They went 75 yards on 12 plays for their second tally. Chavis went the fnal 5 yards to score with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter.
With 22 seconds left in the first quarter, Chavis ran 3 yards for another touchdown, putting the Texans up 21-0.
Chavis scored his third touchdown on a five-yard run in the third quarter with 7:36 remaining.
Kangkolo made it 35-0 with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Dominating the night, the Texans’ defense allowed 117 yards and seven first downs.
“Our defense was good in the first three quarters of the game but we gave up two [touchdowns] in the last quarter,” Patterson said.
The Gophers were able to get on the board with a 25-yard touchdown pass to by Matt Lechuga by Jaylen Fails with 7:11 remaining.
The Texans responded immediately with a 95-yard kick-off return by defensive back Reggie McDaniel.
The Gophers put the final seven points on the board with a 22-yard pass to Jordan Jones with 1:38 remaining.
The Northwest Texans face the Grapevine Mustangs, Friday, Sept. 7, at home.
