Facing the top-ranked team in Class 5A and District 4-5A rival Southlake Carroll, the Northwest Lady Texans held their own on the course Saturday.

The Lady Texans took third at the Southlake Carroll 8-mile relay behind a pair of Lady Dragons teams.

The 4×2-mile squad of Kellee McCann, Katherine Chavez, Taylor Bohr and Sydney Benes finished in 50 minutes and 35 seconds. Carroll’s top team ran 48:39. The Carroll 2 team finished in 50:12.

Northwest coach George Lutkenhaus said his team was in the race most of the way.

“We were leading through two and half miles,” Lutkenhaus said. “We frontloaded knowing what they had. We gave them a run for as long as we could.”

Northwest’s second team finished eighth in 55:26.

The top squad for Class 3A, Decatur, took ninth. The team of Georgina Palomo, Paola Palomo, Nicole Neighbors and Nancy Torres ran 55:31.

Decatur’s second team of Morgan Haney, Jessi Kyle, Lluvia Ramos and Hope Fuller was 14th in 57:28.

In the boys race, Northwest’s “A” team that included Zach Kirkland, Ashton Shelton, Jacob Suchors and Trenton Koestler finished fourth in 43:46. Carroll finished in the top three spots.

“We were up with Southlake most of the race,” Lutkenhaus said.

Decatur’s first team was seventh. The team of Taylor Clayton, Travis Kyle, Daniel Smyers and Brandon Rivera ran 44:53. The second group of Eagles, including Austin Poole, Michael Smyers, Tyler Wilson and Joaquin Aldape, was 18th in 46:11.
