Steers skunk Bulls, 54-0

By Bob Buckel | Published Saturday, October 6, 2012

Graham’s hurry-up offense and tough defense was too much for the short-handed Bridgeport Bulls Friday, as the visitors rolled to a 54-0 win to drop their hosts to 2-4 on the season.

Gabe Huerta, injured during last week’s game, did not play. Sophomore Michael Rivera carried the load for Bridgeport, lugging the ball 15 times for 43 hard-earned yards, but seeing little daylight against a big Graham defense.

The Steers scored with 6:24 to play in the first quarter on a two-yard dive by quarterback Ben Davis, who accounted for four touchdowns on the chilly evening. Fidel Herrera’s kick was good and it was 7-0.

With just over a minute left in the opening stanza, Graham scored again on a 17-yard Davis to Bryce Reeves pass.

Things got out of hand in the second quarter as Davis scored again with just over a minute left – a three-yard dive set up by a 44-yard pass to Jared Mahan.

After a 30-yard punt by Bulls quarterback Trey Cook, Graham took over at their own 45 and mounted a three-minute drive on quick-hitting passes. Davis used seven different receivers on the night. Dillon Gonzales capped the drive with a three-yard run.

After another Cook punt – he booted six times on the night – Davis hit Derek Sides over the middle for 40 yards and went back to him for a 14-yarder on the next play to set up a six-yard TD pass to Bryce Reeves.

Bridgeport’s next drive ended on its first play, as Cook was hit as he delivered the ball and Landon Gonzales picked off the high floater and ran it in from 35 yards out. It was 41-0 at halftime.

The visitors kept it mostly on the ground in the second half, but Dillon Gonzales rolled out of a pile and scampered 32 yards for another Graham touchdown at the 8:53 mark in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Landon Gonzales took a punt back about 70 yards for the final score of the night. Although it looked like he might have stepped on the chalk as he received the ball, no call was made and he brought it back to the middle of the field, then cut back outside and outran the defense.

The Bulls hope to have Huerta back when they open district play at Krum next Friday.
