Roberts, Martinez garner awards; Six Eagles, five Bulls earn honors

DJ Roberts batted .402 and drove in 21 runs as a consistent threat in the middle of the Decatur Eagles’ lineup.

The senior shortstop earned the District 7-3A Offensive Player of the Year honor for his efforts.

He was one of six Decatur players to earn all-district honors. Five Bridgeport Bulls received honors.

Mineral Wells’ Matt Tincher took the MVP award. Defensive Player of the Year went to Burleson Centennial’s Garrett Crook.

Mineral Wells’ Colby Kissinger was the Newcomer of the Year.

Bridgeport junior ace Omar Martinez earned a share of the Pitcher of the Year award with Burleson Centennial’s Turner Jenkins. Martinez posted a 2.40 ERA with 67 strikeouts and eight walks. He also hit .306 with 17 RBIs and a home run.

Decatur ace pitcher Jeremy Adams, second baseman Cooper Jackson and outfielder Chris Saunders made the first team.

Adams posted a 2.42 ERA with a 4-4 record. He struck out 69 and walked 21. Adams also hit .427 with 23 RBIs and four home runs.

Jackson batted .381 with 12 RBIs, 26 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. He finished with a .928 fielding percentage.

Saunders hit .389.

Three Bulls joined the first team. Third baseman and pitcher Reese Read made it as a utility player. Read hit .352 with 13 RBIs. On the mound, he was 7-3 with a 1.9 ERA, striking out 86 with 13 walks. He posted a .941 fielding percentage.

Damian Delgado was the first-team first baseman. Branon Huff, who led the team with a .404 average and drove in 15 runs, made the first-team outfield.

Bridgeport catcher Dillon Waldrep and Decatur first baseman Eric Elder and third baseman Christian Carrillo received second-team selections.

Waldrep hit .376 with a team-high 20 RBIs. He threw out 17 runners.

Elder hit .190 and posted a .951 fielding percentage. Carrillo had a .962 mark in the field while hitting .303 with 11 RBIs.

Bridgeport shortstop Alex Samples received honorable mention.
