Chico’s playoff hopes entered choppy seas Friday after their encounter with a band of Pirates. The Dragons dropped their third straight district game 48-14 to Collinsville.

Collinsville quarterback John Lewis did most of the damage himself, rushing for four touchdowns, passing for another, converting two point-after kicks and running for a two-point conversion. He also ended the night with a game-high 184 yards rushing.

Lewis scored two of his rushing touchdowns in the first quarter on 7-yard and 34-yard runs before Chico got on the board with a 1-yard run by Dylan Hightower. Dalton Tullos’ kick brought the Dragons to within a touchdown at 14-7.

That would be as close as Chico would get all night. Lewis scored two more touchdowns on runs of 51 yards and 7 yards to open up a 28-7 lead for the Pirates with 5:36 remaining in the first half.

The Dragons responded quickly when Hunter York connected on a 59-yard pass to Matt Carter. Tullos’ kick made it 28-14 with 5:04 remaining in the half.

Any momentum by the Dragons was short-lived, however, as Lewis found receiver Jake Vella for a 50-yard score, and Lewis’ kick made it a 35-14 game at the half.

Collinsville added two more scores in the third quarter on runs by Hayden Smith to finish out the scoring.

York had a game-high 120 yards passing, completing 8 of 22 passes with one interception. Carter caught four passes for 104 yards, and Darrion Riggs gained 64 yards on 13 carries.

The loss drops Chico to 0-3 in district play and 4-4 for the season. They will take on Blue Ridge next week.
