Despite a weak start in the first half, the Northwest Texans turned things around in the final two quarters on their way to a 31-10 win over Keller Fossil Ridge.

“We told them at halftime that that was as bad as we could play, and we were still tied 10-10,” Northwest coach Bill Patterson said. “We came out that second half and scored 21 points.”

Fossil Ridge (1-4, 1-1) missed two field goal attempts in the first quarter but finally connected on a 39-yard field goal from Cody Siedel four minutes into the second quarter.

Two minutes later, they scored their only touchdown of the night with a 47-yard pass from Jacob Gnacinski to Chaylon Bowman giving the Panthers a 10-0 lead.

The Texans (4-1, 2-0) responded with a 32-yard field goal from Cayden Ihrig, cutting the deficit to 10-3.

Then less than a minute before halftime, Draze Lawliss completed a 24-yard pass to Emmanual Moore, tying the score 10-10.

Northwest came out strong the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter. Moore received a 19-yard pass by Lawliss, and Stubbe ran 13 yards for the second touchdown. The Texans held a 24-10 lead heading to the final quarter.

Northwest struck one more time with a 16-yard run by Stubbe.

“A lot of it was because of me the first half,” Stubbe said. “I didn’t come out very focused and the second half I told myself that I had to pick it up and hold on to the ball. We came out as a team and won the game.”

The Texans will play Haltom for homecoming at NISD Stadium Friday.

“We’re going to take a whole lot of confidence from this game and after tomorrow, we should be done with this game and be focused on the next,” Stubbe said.
