Northwest falls to defending champs

By Mary Wendell | Published Saturday, October 20, 2012

The Northwest Texans joined a pretty big club Friday night – teams that can’t stop the Carroll Dragons.

The Dragons (6-1, 4-0) rolled to 23 first downs and nearly 500 yards of offense as they handed Northwest their first district 4-5A loss, 45-0.

Southlake’s first touchdown came three minutes into the game on an 8-yard run by quarterback Kenny Hill. They continued their scoring streak with a 13-yard pass from Hill to Luke Timian with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter, and just over a minute later, Ryan Weigel caught a 29-yard pass from Hill to make it 21-0 after just 12 minutes.

The second quarter brought three more touchdowns by the defending state champions. Keaton Duhon caught a 32-yard toss from Hill, then Hill ran 44 yards for a touchdown.

The game’s last touchdown was scored on a 3-yard run by A.J. Ezzard just before halftime.

The Dragons’ final points came on a 30-yard field goal by Drew Brown.

Texan quarterback Draze Lawliss hit 11 of his 24 passes, but those were only good for 70 yards as the Dragons’ defense kept his receivers bottled up most of the night. Chase Morrison caught three, but mustered just 19 hard-earned yards, and interceptions ended two Texan drives.

Dakota Chavis was the Texans’ leading rusher as he fought for 42 yards on 13 carries.

The Texans at 5-2, 3-1 are still very much in the playoff hunt. They will play Keller Timber Creek (2-5, 2-2) at home next Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
