Decatur defeated Bonham in the Class 3A Region II area round playoff at Little Elm Thursday, 25-16, 25-17, 25-9.

“Every time you come into your first playoff game you come in with some nerves,” Decatur coach Claire Rose said. “The majority of them haven’t played in a playoff game. It was nice to come out and play strong.”

Decatur fell behind early 2-0 in the first set, but rallied with a 9-2, run forcing a Bonham time-out.

The Lady Warriors crept to within 16-11, but a Makayla Mayfield kill started a 9-5 run that ended the first set.

Bonham put up their biggest test in the second game. The Lady Warriors jumped out to an early lead, but this time would not let it go. They led 10-6 before the Lady Eagles started their comeback.

A Taylor Uselton ace tied the game 12-12, forcing another Bonham time-out. Out of the break, momentum stayed with Decatur. Caroline Lowery ended a 7-3 run with another kill, giving the Lady Eagles a 19-14 advantage.

Decatur slowly began to break Bonham’s will, putting the game away on another Mayfield kill.

The Lady Warriors had nothing left for the final set as Decatur opened on a 10-1 run. The Lady Eagles dominated the entire game, ending the night on a Cooper Martin kill.

“The third set is definitely more how we play,” Rose said. “It was good to see them recover and get better throughout the whole match. [Bonham] kept the ball in play, and we had to work really hard to find our kills.”

Mayfield led Decatur with 10 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Martin finished with nine kills and seven digs. Lowery had eight kills, four blocks, three aces and five digs. Darci Billmire added five kills and six blocks.

Stormi Leonard handed out 32 assists and recorded four aces.

Decatur will take on District 9-3A rival Krum in the regional quarterfinal Tuesday at Sanger beginning at 7 p.m.
