The pre-game line had Boyd as a 2-point favorite, but the bottom line Friday night said Callisburg 48, Boyd 46.
How it got from 0-0 to there was a heavyweight fight, with both boxers slugging it out to the last bell. In the end, 476 rushing yards gave the Wildcats the edge over the visiting Yellowjackets.
Boyd, which falls to 2-1 in district 5-2A play, led through most of the first half after scoring first on a 58-yard bomb from Blake McDonald to Fino Cardona. McDonald was 15-for-26 on the night for 319 yards. Nathan Thomas’ kick made it 7-0.
Callisburg answered on a 32-yard run by quarterback Rheyce Childress, but Adrian Nelson blocked the PAT kick and the ‘Jackets maintained a 7-6 lead. That increased to 13-6 with 3:25 left in the quarter when Cardona carried it in from seven yards out.
But the PAT kick was blocked – one of several points that would become crucial by the end of the evening.
Late in the quarter, Callisburg was driving when Chris Carmona intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards to put Boyd back in business at the Wildcat 28. They cashed in just eight seconds into the second frame when Cardona scored his third touchdown of the night, from 23 yards out. Thomas’ kick was good and it was 20-6.
But Callisburg went to a pound-it-at-them ground game and scored two straight touchdowns on an 11-yard run by Clay McKenzie and a four-yard run by Dakota Tinney. McKenzie kicked both PATs and the score was tied with 6:23 left in the half.
After offsetting penalties took a Callisburg interception off the board and gave Boyd the ball back, the Yellowjackets drove down the field and regained the lead at 1:52 on a six-yard run by Cardona. But again, the PAT kick was no good.
Callisburg answered again, this time on a 20-yard run by McKenzie, who ended the night with 247 yards rushing and six made PAT kicks. It was 27-26 when Boyd took the ball and McDonald hit three straight passes – a 41-yarder to Meador, a 15-yarder to Carmona and an 11-yard scoring strike to Nelson.
But the two-point conversion try at the end of the half failed, and the ‘Jackets took an uneasy 32-27 lead into the locker room.
Callisburg scored the next three touchdowns, including two in the third quarter on runs of 13 and 23 yards and a four-yarder with just 3:25 left to play in the fourth. McKenzie kicked all three PATs and it was 48-32 as the clock ticked under three minutes.
That lead was also uneasy, as it turned out. A roughing-the-passer penalty with two-and-a-half minutes to play put the ‘Jackets in business at the Wildcat 14, and Cardona scored 34 seconds later on a two-yard run. A two-point conversion try failed.
Callisburg jumped on the ensuing on-side kickoff at their own 43, but fumbled on their first play and Boyd recovered. A 20-yard McDonald-to-Meador completion was called back on a holding penalty with 1:36 left, but the Wildcats were flagged for unnecessary roughness with 45 seconds left to move Boyd to the 25 yard line.
With seven seconds left, McDonald hit Meador again, this time for a 15-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion run by McDonald was good this time, and it was a two-point game.
Callisburg jumped on the on-side kick, however, and ran out the clock as the game ended.
